Q: Why do you invest in ETFs?

A: I have a hard time trying to determine which stocks / companies will outperform the market. So I do my best to match the markets with a balanced portfolio. Investing in ETFs gives me the best opportunity to do that. I feel ETFs are a more calculated approaching to investing.

Q: What type of ETFs do you invest in?

A: I focus my efforts and stick to basic ETFs – the ones that try to mimic the major market averages. I mostly stick to what I know. Occasionally I’ll venture out of my comfort zone and invest in a newer ETF. They use a lot of derivatives to attempt to outperform the markets, they’re designed to appreciate in price faster with a smaller price change on the underlying security. Making a habit out of this might be risky, at least for me. That said, I do think it’s good to move out of your comfort zone a little from time to time.

Q: What would you say to someone who wants to become an ETF investor?

A: Educate yourself about this type of trading before you make any serious commitments. There is a lot of information to sift through. I had an idea, I did my research, I went after ETFs that fit well with my idea and only then did I start to invest. It was calculated and I suggest the same approach for anyone who wants to invest in ETFs. Just keep reading and learning. When you’re well-informed is when you’re ready to make some moves.
